My fiancee texted me to remind me about tonight's Oscars on TV. I opted to just do a quick search online. Man, talk about underwhelming. As nice as some of them are, they're just nice and nice doesn't cut it. These celebrities have millions, billions, and gajillions of dollars and they can't buy some better dresses? Or, maybe the designers aren't cuttin' it this year? I'm surprised no one was wearing Vera Wang. She was on fi-yah back in the 2000s.
After much deliberation, the only dress that I sorta kinda liked was Zoe Saldana's. And even then, I'm not sure how I feel about the frilly floral things on the bust, and that belt! That belt makes the dress seem less formal. The only reason I picked this dress was because of the open front skirt. I imagine it flows nicely with you while you're walking, kind of like a pretty mop as it glides across the floor. Okay, that doesn't sound like an attractive description. You know what I mean, like it sweeps the floor in an elegant, fluttering manner.
Sigh..Zoe looks so sad and to top it off, her make-up is lookin' booty. The model looks better than her. =(
To cheer Zoe and myself up, I've compiled my list of the top 5 best dressed ladies of the past Oscars.
5. Diane Kruger in Chanel, 2011

This is so chic, yet very classic. The tiers of flowers and pleating at the lower hem are gorgeous. Who can resist Chanel?
4. Nicole Kidman in Chanel, 2002.
Dreamy and frothy. It's simple, but so pretty and delicate. Like I said, who doesn't love Chanel?
3. Michelle Williams in Vera Wang, 2006
Love the color! Oh, and the ruffled bodice, low-neck line, pleating at the center of the skirt, and sheer overlay on the train. It's all in the details.
2. Charlize Theron in Vera Wang, 2000
Charlize was sportin' that old Hollywood Glamour before everyone was doing it on the red carpet. She even has fingerwaves and that plunging back is so sexy! I loved her look so much; I had something very similar made for my senior prom. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything like those Fred Leighton clips and had to settle for big pearl beads from Michael's. And, I couldn't find anyone that could do fingerwaves on Asian hair. Needless to say, it was sort of a fail.
1. Cate Blanchett in Givency Haute Couture, 2011
It's not sexy, slinky, or body-hugging, but it's so different from anything I've seen at any awards show thus far! The silhouette of the shoulders is unique. It juts straight out instead of forming a sleeve or conforming to the shoulder and arms. It looks a little odd at first, but it works! The beaded detailing on the front is beautiful--subtle, but intriguing. Then you have that little pop of yellow at the top of the shoulders that continue down the back. I adore this dress!
Honorable Mention: Michelle Williams in Chanel, 2011
It's not just the dress, but Michelle William's overall look. I love its simplicity: pixie haircut, no jewelry (except those tiny earrings), and light pink lips. The dress itself is also very simple: sheer, white beading, and column silhouette with cap sleeves. The sheerness of the dress follows every curve of her body. It's sexy, but not overtly so. She looks so polished and elegant that I'm thinking of reorganizing this list.
